the idea behind technique that, upon e-mail opening, image downloaded server, providing them ip address , timestamp. although, relying on image being fetched, service fails image not fetched (which can configure many e-mail clients do). edit: there faq entry on topic.

inserting such image e-mail simple: need e-mail html content , insert new node. second drawback: fails when use text messages. instead, have create new html message.
